A Handful of Health Benefits Associated with Chocolate

Eating chocolate can offer a wide range of health benefits. Cocoa beans, for example, have some of the highest concentrations of antioxidants (such as polyphenols, catechins, and flavanols) of any food.
Because antioxidants protect lipoproteins in the blood stream from oxidative damage, consuming chocolate can lower the level of oxidized “bad” cholesterol in the system. (When oxidized, bad cholesterol can react with and damage tissues, including artery lining.) Dark chocolate has also been shown to reduce insulin resistance, which can lower risk of diabetes and heart disease.
In addition, a study involving healthy volunteers found that consuming cocoa with high flavanol content five days in a row improved blood flow to the brain, which could actually help the brain function more effectively. Based on that study, University of Reading researchers hypothesized that chocolate would also increase blood flow to retinas and improve vision.
